Adobe Contribute (formerly Macromedia Contribute) is a discontinued specialized HTML editor. As its name implies, it is intended to contribute content to existing websites, including blogs. It includes plug-ins for Internet Explorer and Firefox that allow users to make their contributions from within their web browsers.[2] Unlike its sibling, Adobe Dreamweaver, Contribute is not intended to create a website from scratch or engage in web development or web design.

Contribute operates in a client–server model: the website to which it contributes must support accepting additions or editions from Contribute and be able to verify that the person doing is so actually allowed. Built-in WordPress and Blogger support are available in Contribute. In addition, Adobe Dreamweaver can create contribute-friendly websites.[3]

Contribute is designed to inter-operate with Adobe Dreamweaver and other Adobe products.[3] It was included in the Web Premium[4] and the Master Collection[5] editions of Adobe Creative Suite until version 5.5.

On January 27, 2017, Adobe announced that it was discontinuing Contribute. Sales of Contribute ceased on February 1, 2017.[6][7]

Contribute includes the following versions: Contribute CS3, Contribute 4, Contribute 3.x, Contribute 2.x and Contribute 1.x. If you have specific questions about a particular Contribute version, try to use the Adobe Contribute Knowledge Base search engine to query for particular issues.

Contribute CS3 is bundled with the Adobe Web Creative Suite 3, and includes integration with other Adobe Web products such as Dreamweaver CS3 and Flash CS3. Contribute 2 and earlier versions do not have the same features as Contribute 3 and later versions, and it is advisable to upgrade Contribute to a newer version.

Contribute is a WYSIWYG web authoring program that allows users to quickly and easily make updates to web pages. Contribute can be used to make new pages or to edit existing pages. Contribute users can also use templates created in Dreamweaver. See 'Using templates with Contribute' (TechNote 16581) or use the Starter Page templates that are included with Contribute.

Contribute has a built-in browser that is embedded with Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox. When viewing the page to be edited, click the Edit Page button. Contribute will switch from browse to edit mode, offering a toolbar with common text and table editing features, including options to make links and insert images. When your edits are done, click the Publish button and the page will be uploaded to the server. Contribute will switch back to browser mode and display the new page, live on the web! It's that easy.

Contribute allows you to edit and create web pages. You can create and format text and tables. You can insert images, Flash .swf files, FlashPaper documents, Adobe Acrobat PDF, Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents (Windows only), and PayPal buttons (version 2 and above). With Contribute 3 and later, you can insert digital video and even a Google toolbar. You can use Dreamweaver templates and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets).

You can easily administer and manage a site and its users using features like Connection Keys and user roles. You can use Contribute in addition to updating dynamic content via web blogs.

What is the difference between Contribute and Dreamweaver?

Dreamweaver is Adobe's full-fledged website building program. Dreamweaver has more functionality than Contribute, and is designed to handle more than just HTML as an editor. Contribute is designed to be an easy web page editor that does not require knowledge of code. Therefore, Contribute does not include code editing as a feature. You do not need Dreamweaver to use Contribute.

You can use Dreamweaver templates and Library Items (Contribute 3 and later) within Contribute to quickly make new pages that are already set up, allowing the Contribute user to add the necessary content to the page. Contribute will recognize CSS styles added in Dreamweaver and allow users to apply custom classes. Dreamweaver MX 6.1 and later can be used to administer Contribute users.
